Cement Ball Mill Structure & Working Principle
The cement ball mill is mainly composed of a horizontal cylindrical shell, feeding & discharging hollow shafts, liner plates, and grinding media. The mill body is a long cylinder, with many grinding balls inside. The cylinder is made of steel plates, and the inner part of the cylinder is fixed with ball mill liners; the grinding balls are steel balls with different diameters, which are installed into the cylinder in a certain proportion. There are also ball mills that use steel segments or steel rods instead of steel balls as grinding media.


Length Diameter Ratio
The length-diameter ratio of the cement ball mill is relatively large. For mills of open-circuit grinding system, the length-diameter ratio is usually between 3.5 and 6 to ensure that the product fineness is qualified through single grinding; For ball mills in closed-circuit grind system, in order to increase the material flow rate, the length-diameter ratio should be between 2.3 and 3.5.
Grinding Compartment
A cement ball mill is generally divided into two or three grinding compartments. The larger the length-diameter ratio of the ball mill is, the more compartments there are. For dry ball mills used in the closed-circuit grinding system, when divided into two compartments, the first compartment length accounts for 30% – 40% of the total length, and the second accounts for 60% – 70%; When divided into three compartments, the first one accounts for 25% – 30% of the total length, the second one accounts for 25% – 30%, and the third one accounts for 45% – 50%.

Working Principle
Take the closed-circuit double bin cement ball mill as an example. Through the feeding device of the ball mill, the cement clinkers are fed into the first grinding compartment, in which they are impacted and crushed to a certain size by the grinding balls with a larger average diameter, and then enter the second compartment through the intermediate diaphragm. The grinding media in the second compartment have a smaller average ball diameter, and the material is further ground by them. The milled materials are discharged from the lower outlet of the discharging device through the discharge grate plate, and then sorted by the matched cement separator. The coarse materials are re-fed into the mill to continue grinding. The qualified fine powder is discharged as finished cement.
