What is a rotary dryer?

The rotary dryer is a type of heavy dryer machine that is widely applied in both agriculture and industry for bulk material drying.

Rotary dryer machines mainly rely on the heated air to dry the material. The main body of the rotary dryer is a slightly inclined rotary cylinder. Wet materials are fed into the cylinder from the upper end, heated and dried by hot gas, and discharged from the lower end.

Applications

Rotary dryers are often applied to dry granular materials with high water content. You may spot them in many industries processing various types of materials.

In the cement industry, rotary dryers are often used to dry cement raw meals and raw materials such as limestones and gypsum.

Because high water content in raw materials may reduce the efficiency of cement crushers, and slow down the crushing process, the fresh limestones sent from quarries are best dried in rotary dryers before feeding into crusher machines.

In agriculture, rotary dryers are used to process fertilizer, biomass, animal feeds, and agriculture by products, etc.

In mining industry, several of minerals including limestone, clays, gypsum, sand, coke, bauxite, etc. can be dried by rotary drum dryers.

In coal industry, rotary dryers are applicable for the drying of coal slime, raw coal, lignite, mixed refined coal, power plant fuel, and flotation coal, etc.

And chemical industry, metallurgy industry, food production industry, construction materials and other industries, the list goes on. They all employ rotary dryers for bulk material drying.

Structure Design

The main parts of a rotary dryer include a rotary drum cylinder, two riding rings, a gear guard, a drive assembly, a burner, a combustion chamber, an exhaust handling system, drum shell ridings, and so on.

There are also optional components including a gas generator, supporting hoist, belt conveyor, quantitative feeder, cyclone dust collector, induced draft fan, etc. You can choose if you need them according to your production requirements.

Rotary Dryer Working Principle

When the bottom temperature of the rotary dryer is heated between 400℃ and 800℃, the materials can be fed into the dryer cylinder from the upper end. Under the influence of gravity and the rotation of the cylinder, the material is dispersed and evenly moves to the lower end of the cylinder.

At the same time, the hot air stove at the lower part of the dryer generates high-temperature hot airflow, which enters the cylinder from the lower end and moves upward. When the hot air contacts the material, the heat is transferred from the air to the material by means of heat conduction, convection, and radiation. With the temperature of the material increasing, the moisture content in the material gradually evaporates.

There are many flights on the inner wall of the cylinder. With the rotation of the cylinder, these flights constantly throw the materials to make them fully in contact with the hot air and improve the drying efficiency.

Finally, the dried material is discharged from the discharge port at the lower end of the cylinder, and the gas with steam is extracted by the fan from the chimney, and the drying process is completed.

Rotary Dryer Type

According to the different methods that the materials are heated, the rotary dryers can be divided into two types: the direct rotary drum dryer and the indirect rotary drum dryer.

Direct Rotary Drum Dryer

In direct rotary drum dryers, the processing materials directly contact with the drying air and are heated through convection. This type of heat transfer possesses a higher thermal efficiency, which makes direct rotary drum dryers the most widely applied rotary dryers.

Indirect Rotary Drum Dryer

In indirect rotary drum dryers, the processing materials are not directly contacted and heated by the drying air. Instead, they are dried by making contact with the drum shell, which is heated to a high temperature by the hot air. Generally, this type of rotary dryer is applied when the processing material is best not to be contacted by hot drying air.
